The work and program of the N.C. Senior Citizens Association continues to expand as the disaster planning for seniors begins to solidify. I am pleased that we will be partnering on the sponsoring and development of a forum on Disaster Planning with the Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging. Ann Johnson, chair person and I are planning this unique forum which will bring together state and private agencies involved in disaster planning. I encourage you to be involved by informing our office of your interest in participating in this forum.
Secondly, I am pleased to announce that the 100 unit Affordable Housing Project at Lake Junaluska broke ground on June 30th with completion scheduled by December 2007. This will be the first such project in the nation which has been developed by a mixed financing of HUD, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, (3.4million), tax credits ( 10 million), Federal Housing Land Bank (9,000,000 grant and 300,000 loan), and the Duke Endowment (250,000). As chair of the sponsoring agency, SEMAR, Southeastern Jurisdiction Association for Rehabilitation, I am pleased to announce that Givens Estate Retirement Community has joined the project as project developer and program coordinator.
Thirdly, Asbury Homes, an agency of the NC Annual Conference of United Methodist Church has just closed on a HUD grant of $383,000 for the Group Home for adults with developmental disabilities in Tabor City. The grant enables Asbury Homes to develop a single assist corporation – Goremont, the owners of the facility. Included in this grant are renovation funds of $125,000 which will upgrade the physical facility. I serve as the part-time executive director of Asbury Homes, Inc. and invite you to visit our renovated facility in the fall.
Fourth, I continue to represent the NC Senior Citizens Association on the N.C. Healthy Aging Coalition and Coalitions for Seniors in Housing Projects.
