Jerry D. Prince of Calabash received the Ernest B. Messer Award at the June 5 Annual Luncheon of the North Carolina Senior Citizens Association. Held at the N.C. State University Club in Raleigh the audience of approximately 250 cheered as Prince, a former Fire Chief was surprised and pleased by the award.

And it would have pleased Ernest Messer. Messer was a strong advocate of senior centers. Prince was nominated by Jennifer Sherman of Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc.

Messer also admired someone who could endure adversity and Prince had to retire because of cancer. Yet in his appreciation speech Prince told the audience to “never give up.”

Prince is a former chaplain, fire inspector, teacher, business owner and volunteer.

He drives seniors to medical facilities; he visits the homebound and works with the needy and disadvantaged.

He works with drug addicts and acts as a fundraiser for non-profit organizations. He is Messer’s kind of man.

Messer, a former president of the North Carolina Senior Citizens Association served as Assistant Secretary of the North Carolina Division of Aging in the eighties.

Prior to that appointment by Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr. he was a member of the North Carolina General Assembly for 19 years, acting as author of most legislation to assist the elderly. He was chair of the House Committee on Aging.
